Our client is a leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with a strong track record in delivering complex infrastructure projects across Ireland, the UK, and internationally. The Dublin office serves as a key hub for major transportation, water, and energy schemes. We are now seeking an Associate specialising in Tunnels and Underground Structures to lead project delivery, provide technical excellence, and help grow our underground engineering capability in Ireland.

Role Overview:

As an Associate (Tunnels and Underground Structures), you will play a pivotal role in the planning, design, and management of major underground works including tunnels, shafts, caverns, and related civil structures. You will lead multidisciplinary design teams, provide technical leadership, and act as a client-facing representative, ensuring successful delivery of projects from feasibility through to construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design and delivery of tunnel and underground structure projects (road, rail, metro, utilities, and water sectors).
  • Provide technical expertise in geotechnical and structural design for underground works including TBM, NATM, SCL, and cut-and-cover tunnels.
  • Oversee preparation of design reports, specifications, and tender documentation in compliance with Eurocodes and relevant Irish/UK standards.
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers and contribute to their professional development.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (geotechnical, structural, environmental, MEP, BIM, etc.) to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Engage with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to support project delivery and business development.
  • Contribute to bids, proposals, and technical presentations to win new work.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and quality management systems.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s degree desirable).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with Engineers Ireland or equivalent professional body.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the design and delivery of tunnel and underground structure projects.
  • Proven technical knowledge in tunnel design methods, temporary works, and ground–structure interaction.
  • Experience managing teams and delivering projects within budget and schedule.
  • Strong client-facing, communication, and leadership skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience with Irish infrastructure projects (e.g. MetroLink, DART+, major utilities).
  • Working knowledge of BIM, numerical modelling (PLAXIS, FLAC, MIDAS), and digital design tools.
  • Experience in design-build or PPP environments.
  • Knowledge of Eurocodes, TII, and Irish Water standards.
