We are working with a well-established and rapidly growing civil engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal Highways Engineer to play a key role in expanding its Highways Team based in Birmingham. This position offers the opportunity to help shape and grow a developing team, work on a diverse portfolio of projects, and influence the strategic direction of the highways discipline.
Role Purpose
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, project management, and team development support within a collaborative and ambitious environment. You will work across highways design, infrastructure delivery, and multidisciplinary coordination, helping to meet increasing demand for high-quality engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of highways design projects from feasibility through detailed design and construction support.
- Support the growth and development of the Birmingham highways team, including mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level engineers.
- Provide technical oversight, quality assurance, and design approvals.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders, including clients, local authorities, and contractors.
- Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, design calculations, and specifications.
- Assist with project planning, fee proposals, and resource management.
- Contribute to business development initiatives and help strengthen client relationships.
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered (CEng/MICE) or working toward chartership.
- Significant experience in UK highways design, including multidisciplinary coordination.
- Strong working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and relevant local authority design standards.
- Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and related highways tools.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide and inspire a growing team.
- Proven ability to manage projects, clients, and commercial aspects.
Desirable
- Experience supporting team growth or managing small teams.
- Background in urban highways, active travel, or development infrastructure.
- Knowledge of drainage or SuDS would be advantageous but not essential.
