Access Talent Group are currently recruiting for a growing specialist engineering consultancy is looking for an experienced Associate or Associate Director Process Engineer to join its expanding water team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer to take a leading role across a varied portfolio of wastewater projects with prospects of developing clean water non infrastructure projects within their frameworks. Current work is focused on wastewater treatment and network-related challenges, alongside the development of new clean water projects and infrastructure.

The role offers a balance of process engineering, mechanical engineering and multidisciplinary design, with the opportunity to influence projects from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design, construction and commissioning. You will also have the opportunity to help shape the continued growth of the process engineering capability within a smaller, agile consultancy.

The Role

You will provide technical leadership across a range of water and wastewater projects, working closely with clients, contractors, civil, mechanical, electrical and ICA engineers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the process design and development of water and wastewater treatment solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Work across a mixture of current wastewater treatment projects and developing clean water schemes.
  • Develop process solutions, treatment strategies, process calculations, mass balances, PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Review existing treatment assets and identify opportunities for optimisation, improvement and capacity enhancement.
  • Develop and assess treatment options, considering performance, efficiency, whole-life cost, operability and constructability.
  • Provide process engineering input into the design of pumping, dosing, aeration and other mechanical/process systems.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers to ensure process requirements are translated into practical equipment and system designs.
  • Produce and review technical reports, specifications, calculations, schedules and design documentation.
  • Coordinate process requirements across civil, mechanical, electrical, ICA and structural disciplines.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical workshops, HAZOPs and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and project handover.
  • Review designs and technical deliverables produced by other engineers, providing technical governance and mentoring.
  • Support project managers with programme, resource and commercial requirements.
  • Liaise directly with clients, contractors, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
  • Support bids, proposals, fee estimates and business development activities.
  • Help develop the wider process engineering capability and technical offering within the business.

Mechanical Engineering Exposure

A key element of the position is the ability to understand how process requirements translate into mechanical systems and equipment and you should therefore have some experience or understanding of:

  • Pump selection and pumping systems.
  • Aeration systems and associated equipment.
  • Chemical dosing systems.
  • Process pipework and valves.
  • Mechanical equipment selection and specifications.
  • Equipment schedules and datasheets.
  • P&IDs and process/mechanical interfaces.
  • Existing asset assessment and condition reviews.

You do not need to be a specialist mechanical engineer, but an appreciation of mechanical design and the ability to work effectively with mechanical engineers will be important.

About You

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Chemical, Process, Environmental, Civil, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • CEng status or be actively working towards Chartered status.
  • Significant experience within the UK water and wastewater sector.
  • AMP8/AMP9 programmes.
  • Strong experience in wastewater treatment process design and/or clean water treatment.
  • Experience taking projects from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design.
  • Strong understanding of treatment processes and water industry design requirements.
  • Experience developing process calculations, PFDs, P&IDs and technical reports.
  • HAZOP/HAZID and design risk assessment.
  • Good understanding of mechanical equipment associated with treatment processes.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety, CDM and relevant water industry standards.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and client-facing abilities.
  • A proactive approach to project delivery and business development.
  • Willingness to travel to client and operational sites when required.
  • Experience working for or alongside UK water companies and Tier 1 contractors.

  • Clean water treatment and potable water projects.
  • Process modelling and process calculations.
  • Pumping stations and pumping systems.
  • Aeration and biological treatment.
  • Chemical dosing.
  • Sludge treatment.
  • Water reuse.
  • Process commissioning.
  • Asset condition assessment.
  • WINEP, environmental compliance or water quality improvement programmes.
