We are currently recruiting for a Senior Highway Engineer to join an established highways and civil engineering team. This is a key appointment and an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to take ownership of projects, lead design delivery and support the development of junior engineers and technicians.

The successful candidate will have strong experience in highway and civil engineering design, ideally gained within a consultancy environment, and will be confident working across a range of infrastructure projects.

The Role

You will be responsible for the technical delivery of highway and civil engineering projects from concept through to detailed design. You will work closely with clients, colleagues and project stakeholders while providing technical leadership and supporting the wider engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and delivery of highway and civil engineering schemes, including roads, drainage, earthworks and associated infrastructure.Manage the technical aspects of multiple projects, ensuring delivery to programme, budget and client requirements.Produce and review technically compliant, cost-effective and practical designs.Lead, mentor and support engineers and technicians within the team.Review and approve technical drawings, reports and design documentation.Provide technical solutions to complex civil and highway engineering challenges.Liaise directly with clients and other project stakeholders.Support project meetings, reports, presentations, tenders and fee proposals.Undertake site visits, surveys and inspections where required.Identify and resolve technical issues during design and construction.Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, regulations, health and safety requirements and industry best practice.Promote sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.Support business development and contribute to winning new work.Assist with project budgets, programmes and commercial management where required.Contribute to internal technical reviews and knowledge sharing.

About You

We are looking for an experienced and proactive highway engineer who can take ownership of projects and confidently operate at a senior level.

Essential Experience & Skills

5–8 years' experience in civil/highway engineering design, ideally within a consultancy environment.Strong understanding of highway and civil engineering principles.Experience delivering projects from concept through to detailed design.Strong knowledge of highway, drainage and infrastructure design.Experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other relevant design software.Experience managing projects, programmes, budgets and resources.Ability to lead and mentor engineers and technicians.Strong client-facing and communication skills.Excellent attention to detail and analytical ability.Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively to deadlines.Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

Degree in Civil Engineering (BEng/MEng) or equivalent.Chartered or working towards professional membership with ICE, CIHT, IHE or another relevant professional body.Experience with Section 38 and Section 278 agreements under the Highways Act 1980.Knowledge of Section 104 agreements under the Water Industry Act 1991.Knowledge of Section 23 agreements under the Land Drainage Act 1991.Understanding of CDM Regulations.Previous experience within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.
