SCADA & Substation Automation Engineer (HV Substations)
Location: Lisbon or Porto, Portugal (Office-based)
Hybrid Working: 1 day per week from home

About the Role
We are looking for a SCADA & Substation Automation Engineer to join a growing engineering team delivering HV/MV substation projects for some of Europe's largest hyperscale data centre developments.
This is a design engineering role, where you will be responsible for the design, configuration and integration of SCADA and substation automation systems across greenfield and brownfield HV/MV substations. You'll work alongside protection, primary and secondary design engineers to deliver complete EPC solutions from concept through to commissioning support.

Key Responsibilities
- Design SCADA and Substation Automation Systems for HV/MV substations.
- Produce SCADA architecture, communication network layouts and system design documentation.
- Configure and integrate RTUs, HMIs, gateways and communication equipment.
- Develop communication interfaces using IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3, Modbus and other industry protocols.
- Prepare functional design specifications, signal lists and I/O databases.
- Coordinate with Protection & Control, Primary Design and Commissioning teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support FAT and SAT activities alongside commissioning engineers.
- Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, utility standards and international regulations.
- Review technical documentation and support continuous improvement across engineering processes.
- Provide technical support during project execution and commissioning where required.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience designing SCADA or Substation Automation Systems within HV/MV substations.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation communication architectures.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as:
IEC 60870-5-104
DNP3
Modbus
OPC (desirable)
- Experience working with RTUs, PLCs, HMIs and substation communication networks.
- Understanding of Protection & Control systems within substations.
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings and protection schematics.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Experience working on EPC projects is advantageous.
- Knowledge of data centre or utility infrastructure projects is beneficial.
