We’re working with a medium-sized civil engineering and M&E contractor delivering capital maintenance and project works across the Scottish Water framework. With a strong pipeline of clean and wastewater projects, they are growing their SHEQ team and looking for a hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to support safe delivery across sites in the Central Belt and wider Scotland.
The role
Reporting to the SHEQ Manager, you’ll provide pragmatic H&S advice to project teams from pre-construction through to commissioning. You’ll spend most of your time on site—coaching, auditing, and helping our teams plan and execute work safely in live utility environments.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out site inspections and behavioural safety tours; record findings and drive close-out of actions.
- Support development and review of CPPs, RAMS, lift plans, permits to work and point-of-work risk assessments.
- Advise PMs and Site Managers on compliance with UK H&S law, CDM 2015, and Scottish Water standards.
- Lead incident/near-miss reporting and investigations (root cause, corrective/preventive actions).
- Deliver tool-box talks, inductions, briefings and targeted coaching to staff and supply chain.
- Monitor high-risk activities (excavations, confined spaces, temporary works, lifting ops, electrical isolation).
- Support subcontractor vetting and performance reviews; promote a positive safety culture and continuous improvement.
- Track and report H&S KPIs; contribute to audits and client reviews.
What you’ll need
- NEBOSH General or NEBOSH Construction Certificate (Diploma or working towards is a plus).
- Solid experience as an H&S professional in utilities/civils—ideally water/wastewater projects.
- Working knowledge of CDM 2015, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, Working at Height, Temporary Works principles.
- Confident engaging on site and challenging unsafe acts constructively.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the Central Belt and occasionally wider Scotland.
Desirable (water-sector) certifications
- EUSR National Water Hygiene (Blue Card)
- Scottish Water DOMS (or willingness to obtain)
- Confined Space, Temporary Works awareness/co-ordinator, First Aid at Work, Fire Marshal.
- Membership of IOSH/IIRSM (TechIOSH/GradIOSH or above).
