Our client is a well-established civil engineering and environmental services provider delivering essential infrastructure solutions across Cornwall and the surrounding region. Their capability spans highways maintenance, major civil-engineering projects, coastal protection, surfacing, drainage, environmental services, landscaping, and specialist consultancy. They are recognised for their strong commitment to sustainability, community impact, and long-term social value.

Operating through significant long-term contracts with the local authority, the organisation plays a major role in maintaining and improving Cornwall’s infrastructure. Their civils team supports a wide range of capital works and improvement schemes, delivering solutions that enhance safety, resilience, and connectivity across the county. With ongoing investment in digital tools, modern engineering practices, and innovative design approaches, they offer an exciting environment for forward-thinking engineers.

The organisation is seeking an experienced Civil Design Engineer to join their growing civils team. You will support the planning, design, and delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects, including highways improvements, drainage schemes, public realm enhancements, structures, and environmental infrastructure.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technical design work, problem-solving, and contributing to projects that have a direct impact on local communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality civil engineering designs, drawings, and technical reports for a range of infrastructure projects.
  • Assist in the development of concept, preliminary, and detailed designs across highways, drainage, earthworks, structures, and public realm schemes.
  • Carry out design checks, feasibility studies, site assessments, and surveys.
  • Prepare technical documentation, design calculations, and specifications.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, technicians, and external partners to deliver compliant and cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensure all designs meet relevant industry standards, best practice, and statutory requirements.
  • Support digital engineering workflows, including CAD, BIM, GIS, and modelling platforms.
  • Provide support during construction, including attending site visits, responding to RFIs, and advising on design intent.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, design innovation, and the development of engineering best practice.

About You

  • Experience as a Civil Design Engineer, Design Technician, or similar role within infrastructure or civils projects.
  • Strong technical understanding of highway design, drainage design, public realm, or general civils engineering.
  • Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, or similar tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to produce accurate calculations and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of DMRB, local highway standards, and relevant British Standards.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification (HNC/HND considered with experience).
  • Progress towards professional accreditation (IEng/CEng) welcomed but not essential.
