Working as part of a multidisciplinary consultancy, you will contribute to a diverse range of projects across Ireland and the UK — including renewable energy, transport infrastructure, housing, and conservation schemes.
You will play a key role in the planning, coordination, and delivery of bat surveys and assessments, working closely with colleagues and clients to ensure ecological best practice and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, manage, and undertake bat surveys, including emergence/re-entry, transect, roost, and activity surveys.
- Prepare bat reports, impact assessments, and mitigation strategies for planning applications, EIAs, and AA/NIS reports.
- Assist in the design and implementation of bat mitigation and monitoring schemes, including roost creation and enhancement.
- Analyse and interpret acoustic data using software such as Kaleidoscope, Analook, or BatSound.
- Support the preparation of tenders and fee proposals, providing technical input and scope advice.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and statutory bodies (e.g., NPWS, NIEA) to ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation.
- Supervise and mentor junior ecologists and seasonal staff.
- Contribute to the development of company protocols and best-practice guidance for bat survey work.
Essential Requirements
- A degree in ecology, zoology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years’ professional experience in ecological consultancy, including demonstrable bat survey experience.
- Proficiency in bat call analysis software and report writing.
- Strong understanding of Irish and EU wildlife legislation, particularly the Habitats Directive and associated licensing requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel and work flexible hours (including nights).
Desirable Skills / Qualifications
- Bat handling licence (NPWS or NIEA) or experience assisting under licence.
- Membership (or eligibility for membership) of CIEEM.
- Experience with BREEAM, NIS, EIA, or biodiversity net gain assessments.
- Experience using QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar mapping software.
- Knowledge of wider ecological survey methods (e.g., birds, mammals, or habitats).
- First Aid or Working at Height / CSCS certification.
