We are working with a leading environmental consultancy based in Galway, providing innovative solutions in environmental management, planning, and sustainability. Our multidisciplinary team works on projects across Ireland and internationally, delivering high-quality environmental and geospatial data services. We are looking for a skilled GIS Technician to join our team and support our growing environmental projects.
Job Summary:
The GIS Technician (Environmental) will be responsible for developing, managing, and analysing spatial data to support environmental projects, including ecological assessments, environmental impact assessments (EIAs), habitat mapping, and hydrological studies. The ideal candidate will have strong technical GIS skills, a keen interest in environmental data, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced consultancy environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create, maintain, and update GIS datasets related to environmental projects.
- Perform spatial analysis and generate maps, charts, and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with field data collection and integrate field survey data into GIS databases.
- Support environmental assessments, including habitat mapping, biodiversity surveys, and hydrological studies.
- Ensure GIS data quality, accuracy, and adherence to company and industry standards.
- Collaborate with environmental scientists, ecologists, and engineers to support project deliverables.
- Keep abreast of new GIS technologies, software updates, and environmental mapping techniques.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree or higher qualification in Geography, Environmental Science, GIS, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience working with GIS software, preferably ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
- Experience in environmental mapping, habitat surveys, or ecological data analysis is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of spatial data management, projections, and geodatabases.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data visualization tools.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication and report-writing skills.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with GPS data collection and remote sensing.
- Knowledge of Irish environmental regulations and planning frameworks.
- Experience in programming or scripting for GIS (Python, ModelBuilder, or R).
