ATG are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Botanist to join an environmental and ecological services team in Cork. The successful candidate will play a key role in conducting plant surveys, ecological assessments, and research to support conservation, land management, and environmental impact projects across Munster.

This position will involve both fieldwork and desk-based analysis, requiring strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a passion for plant science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct botanical field surveys and habitat mapping in accordance with Irish and EU biodiversity standards.
  • Identify and record plant species accurately, including rare or protected flora.
  • Carry out ecological assessments, including Appropriate Assessments (AA) and Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA).
  • Monitor plant populations and habitats for conservation projects.
  • Analyse and interpret survey data, producing detailed technical reports.
  • Provide expert input on habitat restoration and management plans.
  • Work collaboratively with environmental scientists, ecologists, and conservation agencies.
  • Stay up to date with relevant legislation, research, and environmental policy affecting botany in Ireland.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Botany, Plant Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
  • Proven experience in botanical surveying and plant identification in Irish habitats.
  • Knowledge of the Flora of Ireland, the Fossitt habitat classification system, and Irish biodiversity legislation.
  • Strong technical writing and data analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with GIS mapping software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS).
  • Full clean driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork.

Desirable Skills

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Botany, Ecology, or related field.
  • Experience with habitat restoration or invasive species management.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIEEM, BSBI).
  • Experience with public engagement and environmental education.
