ATG are seeking a Senior Ecologist to join an expanding Ecology team. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading ecological input to water engineering projects, driving high standards of environmental performance, and mentoring junior colleagues.

You will work closely with engineers, hydrologists, planners, and fellow ecologists to ensure our projects achieve robust ecological outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage ecological aspects of projects, from feasibility to delivery, with a focus on water-related developments (e.g., flood alleviation, drainage schemes, water supply projects).
  • Undertake and oversee ecological surveys, impact assessments, and biodiversity net gain strategies.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, including EcIA, AA Screening, NIS, and species-specific mitigation plans.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders to provide clear, authoritative ecological advice.
  • Mentor and develop junior ecologists, providing technical review and guidance.
  • Contribute to business development through proposals, bids, and identifying new opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, planning policy, and best practice guidelines.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (postgraduate qualification desirable).
  • Chartered Ecologist status or working towards chartership (CIEEM membership essential).
  • At least 6 years’ professional experience in ecological consultancy, including water-related projects.
  • Strong track record in EcIA, Appropriate Assessment, and protected species licensing.
  • Expertise in Irish and EU environmental legislation.
  • Proven project management skills, including budget and programme control.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working alongside engineering teams on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Knowledge of habitat restoration, river ecology, and nature-based solutions.
  • GIS mapping and data analysis skills.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
