Access are currently working with a consultancy specialising in transport, cities and infrastructure. They help public and private clients plan, design and deliver better places and networks. Their Leeds office is growing, and we’re looking for a Pavement Engineer to strengthen our delivery across highways renewals, maintenance, and asset improvement projects.

The role

You’ll deliver and advise on pavement investigations, assessment and design for local authority and national-network schemes. You’ll work across the full project lifecycle—scoping, data collection, analysis, option development, detailed design, and site support—collaborating with colleagues in highways, structures, materials, and project management.

What you’ll do -

  • Plan and manage pavement condition surveys (FWD, coring, visual inspections) and interpret results.
  • Undertake materials assessment and specification for flexible, rigid and composite pavements.
  • Perform structural evaluation and multi-layer elastic analysis; develop maintenance/renewal strategies and whole-life options.
  • Prepare concept, preliminary and detailed pavement designs, drawings and specifications.
  • Contribute to cost estimates, BoQs and risk registers; support value engineering and carbon-reduction options.
  • Author clear technical notes and design reports; present findings to clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input during construction: RFIs, NCR responses, site visits and as-built reviews.
  • Support junior engineers and contribute to internal standards, QA and knowledge sharing.

What you’ll bring -

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Materials Engineering (or similar).
  • Demonstrable experience in pavement assessment and design (consultancy or contractor).
  • Working knowledge of UK highways standards (DMRB), specifications (MCHW/Series 900), and TSRGD/traffic management interfaces.
  • Proficiency with relevant tools (e.g., KENPAVE/BISAR or equivalent multilayer analysis), FWD back-analysis, GIS/CAD (Civil 3D/MicroStation) and Excel.
  • Strong report writing, with the ability to translate data into practical recommendations.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and a full UK driving licence.

It’d be great if you also have -

  • Progress toward IEng/CEng with ICE or IAT (or already chartered).
  • Experience with GPR interpretation, skid resistance/texture analysis, or recycling techniques (CIR, FDR, foam bitumen).
  • Exposure to asset management frameworks (e.g., UKPMS/HMEP), lifecycle costing and carbon assessment.
  • Knowledge of concrete rehabilitation, airfield pavements, or rail/port pavements.
