Access talent Group are currently recruiting for n established and growing specialist engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Project Manager with strong Design Management capability to lead the successful delivery of a portfolio of wastewater non-infrastructure projects for a major UK water utility partner.
This is a key leadership opportunity within a collaborative SME environment where technical expertise, agility and client relationships are at the heart of project success. The business specialises in the delivery of wastewater treatment and process-led schemes, providing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions from concept through to construction support.
Working directly with one of the UK’s leading water companies, you will take ownership of a programme of projects focused on wastewater treatment works upgrades, optimisation, resilience and regulatory improvements. You will play a pivotal role in coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing client expectations, driving programme performance and ensuring technical excellence throughout project delivery.
Role
As Project Manager / Design Manager, you will oversee the delivery of a portfolio of wastewater treatment projects, acting as the central point of coordination between technical teams, delivery partners and the client.
You will be responsible for managing projects through all stages of the design lifecycle, ensuring outputs are technically robust, commercially viable, and aligned with programme objectives.
This role requires a strong understanding of both project management principles and engineering design coordination, with a particular focus on non-infrastructure wastewater treatment schemes.
Responsibilities
Project & Portfolio Management
- Lead a portfolio of wastewater non-infrastructure projects from feasibility through detailed design and construction support.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, risks, resources and deliverables to ensure successful outcomes.
- Monitor project performance and ensure delivery against programme milestones and client expectations.
- Drive effective governance, reporting and commercial oversight across multiple concurrent projects.
Design Management
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams including process, mechanical, electrical, civil and ICA disciplines.
- Oversee design development, ensuring technical quality, constructability and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Facilitate design reviews, technical workshops, HAZOPs and value engineering sessions.
- Ensure effective integration between design delivery and construction requirements.
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with the client, framework partners, contractors and regulators.
- Act as the primary client interface for project delivery, ensuring clear communication and proactive issue resolution.
- Support programme planning and strategic discussions to identify efficiencies and opportunities for continuous improvement.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor project teams, fostering collaboration and accountability.
- Support the development of junior engineers and project staff.
- Promote a positive project culture focused on safety, quality and delivery excellence.
About you
You will have:
- Proven experience delivering water or wastewater treatment projects, ideally within non-infrastructure / treatment environments.
- Strong Project Management experience, coupled with a background in Design Management or multidisciplinary design coordination.
- Experience managing projects for UK water utilities, ideally under framework arrangements.
- Good understanding of wastewater treatment processes and engineering delivery.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and external stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to balance technical, commercial and programme priorities effectively.
Experience
- Degree qualified in Engineering, Environmental, Process, Mechanical, Civil or related discipline.
- Professional membership or chartership (APM, ICE, CIWEM, IMechE, IChemE or equivalent) desirable.
- Experience working within UK water utility frameworks, particularly wastewater treatment programmes.
- Familiarity with NEC contracts, programme management and risk management principles.
