We’re recruiting experienced Civil Engineers to support a variety of railway drainage and civil infrastructure projects across the South East. This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex and high-impact schemes involving trackside drainage systems, embankment stabilisation, culverts, soakaways, and associated civil works, while progressing your career toward chartership or further leadership responsibilities.

About the Role

You’ll play an integral part in the optioneering, design, planning, and delivery of key drainage and infrastructure projects within the rail sector. The position involves close collaboration with contractors, railway operators, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and compliant engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

  • Undertake the design of railway drainage systems and related minor civil works.
  • Contribute to design development, feasibility studies, and optioneering exercises.

Project Management

  • Support or manage projects from concept through to completion, ensuring quality, time, and cost objectives are met.
  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, and specifications.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with engineers, clients, and external partners to develop effective solutions.
  • Participate in project meetings, progress reviews, and design coordination sessions.

Site Work & Compliance

  • Carry out site inspections and surveys to ensure works align with design intent and industry standards.
  • Ensure quality control, compliance with railway regulations, and adherence to safety requirements.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Chartered Engineers will provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Opportunities to develop leadership skills and manage small project teams.

Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in drainage design — preferably within rail, but experience from highways or water projects will also be considered.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to engineering challenges.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site visits.
  • Willingness to obtain PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification if not already held.

Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working toward it.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or MicroDrainage.
  • Previous experience working on Network Rail or London Underground schemes.
