About the role
We’re looking for a motivated Bridge Design Engineer with 3–5 years’ hands-on experience to join our structural/transportation team. You’ll work on the design, analysis and detailing of bridges and associated civil structures for highways, rail and pedestrian projects. This role blends technical design, client-facing communication and coordination with multi-discipline teams.
Key responsibilities
- Design and analyse bridge structures (steel, concrete, composite, and timber as required) from concept through to detailed design.
- Produce calculations, design reports and technical specifications in accordance with relevant codes and client standards.
- Create and check structural models using industry software (finite element and frame/girder analysis).
- Prepare and/or review construction drawings, reinforcement schedules and connection details (using CAD / BIM tools).
- Collaborate with geotechnical, highway, rail, environmental and construction teams to produce coordinated deliverables.
- Attend client meetings, site visits and design workshops; present technical solutions clearly.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to QA/QC checks on designs and deliverables.
- Support tender preparation, cost estimating and programming when required.
Required skills & experience
- 3–5 years’ professional experience in bridge or heavy civil structural design.
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng/MEng or equivalent). Chartered or working towards chartership (e.g., CEng/PE) is desirable.
- Practical experience using structural analysis and bridge-specific software (examples: MIDAS Civil, LUSAS, SOFiSTiK, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ANSYS, or similar).
- Proficient in CAD and/or BIM tools (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Revit).
- Strong knowledge of applicable design codes (e.g., Eurocode/BS, AASHTO, LRFD, relevant national standards). If you have experience with local/regional codes, highlight it.
- Good technical report writing and presentation skills.
- Demonstrable experience producing construction-ready drawings and calculations.
- Excellent verbal communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong problem-solving, attention to detail and time-management skills.
