About the Role
We are seeking an experienced HSE Manager to join an established mechanical engineering and contracting business delivering the full mechanical package on a major data centre project in Belgium.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for HSE management across all mechanical construction activities on site, ensuring works are delivered safely and in full compliance with client, contractor and statutory requirements.
Working closely with the Mechanical Project Manager, construction teams, subcontractors, main contractor and client, you will provide strong leadership on site and ensure a proactive safety culture is maintained throughout the project.
The company has recently secured a new €1.2 million contract with a major European General Contractor, creating a strong pipeline of further projects across Europe.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for HSE across the mechanical construction package.
- Develop, implement and monitor project-specific HSE plans, procedures and risk assessments.
- Ensure all mechanical works are carried out in accordance with Belgian legislation, client requirements and project HSE standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety walks.
- Identify hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
- Review and approve RAMS, method statements and risk assessments.
- Monitor mechanical subcontractors and ensure compliance with site safety requirements.
- Lead toolbox talks, safety briefings and HSE training.
- Investigate incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions, implementing corrective and preventative actions.
- Maintain accurate HSE records, reports and documentation.
- Attend HSE meetings with the main contractor, client and other project stakeholders.
- Work closely with site management to ensure safe planning and execution of mechanical activities.
- Monitor high-risk activities including lifting operations, work at height, hot works, confined spaces and mechanical installation.
- Promote a strong zero-incident safety culture across the mechanical workforce.
- Support inspections, audits, commissioning and project handover activities.
Mechanical Construction Scope
The HSE Manager will oversee safety across activities including:
- HVAC installation
- Chilled water systems
- Mechanical pipework
- Mechanical plant installation
- Ventilation systems
- Pumps and associated equipment
- Plant room installation
- Data centre cooling infrastructure
- Lifting and material handling
- Testing and commissioning activities
Requirements
- Proven experience as an HSE Manager, HSE Lead, Safety Manager or similar on large-scale construction projects.
- Strong experience within mechanical construction or MEP environments.
- Previous experience on data centres, pharmaceutical, industrial, commercial or other mission-critical projects is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of construction health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Experience managing HSE across large mechanical installation teams and subcontractors.
- Strong knowledge of RAMS, risk assessments, audits, inspections and incident investigation.
- Confident working directly with clients, main contractors and senior project stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work proactively and challenge unsafe practices when required.
- Relevant HSE qualification such as NEBOSH, IOSH or equivalent.
- Fluent English.
- Willingness to work on a rotational basis in Belgium.
