Our client is seeking an experienced Project Manager with a strong rail background to lead the delivery of a major rail infrastructure project in Essex. This is a senior project management position with responsibility for managing the project from contractor appointment and mobilisation through to practical completion and handover. The role will involve coordinating a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, managing a significant capital programme, and ensuring delivery against programme, budget, quality and safety objectives.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience delivering rail and civil engineering infrastructure projects, ideally with experience across transport, logistics or major infrastructure environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day management and delivery of the rail infrastructure project.
  • Represent the client across a diverse stakeholder group, including internal rail teams, rail authorities, consultants, contractors and suppliers.
  • Manage and coordinate the professional project team, ensuring a high level of performance and effective collaboration.
  • Lead the contractor procurement and appointment process through to mobilisation and delivery.
  • Manage interfaces between the civil works contractor and equipment suppliers.Establish and maintain robust project management frameworks, processes and controls.
  • Manage project scope, change, variations, risks, issues, dependencies and critical-path deliverables.Develop and maintain detailed project programmes, schedules and reporting systems.
  • Monitor project costs, committed expenditure and approved budgets, applying Earned Value Management (EVM) principles.
  • Prepare and manage project estimates, budgets, cash-flow forecasts and financial reporting.

About You

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • 10–15 years' experience in Rail Project Management, including project setup and delivery from concept through to handover.
     
  • Proven experience managing major rail and civil engineering infrastructure projects.Experience delivering projects of approximately £50m CapEx or similar scale.
     
  • A strong background in transport infrastructure, logistics facilities or other major civil engineering environments.
     
  • Demonstrable experience managing civil design, construction standards, consultants, tenders and contractors.
     
  • The ability to apply sound civil engineering principles to review, challenge and assess concepts and designs.
     
  • Strong project controls experience, including scheduling, budgeting, cost monitoring, cash flow and reporting.
     
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage at senior level.
     
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving capabilities.
     
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and developing high-performance project environments.
     
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with strong attention to detail and commercial awareness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering
     
  • Postgraduate qualification in Project Management or a related discipline is desirable.
     
  • MICE membership is preferred.Knowledge of structured project management frameworks and methodologies, preferably PMI / PMBOK
     
  • Experience with project management and technical systems, including MS Office and AutoCAD.
