We are working with a growing, independent transport planning consultancy that specialises in private-sector development projects. Their work spans site access and masterplanning, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, and expert witness services.

This is a rare opportunity to join at a senior level and play a key role in shaping the business. They are looking for a Director – Transport Planning to drive growth, develop client relationships, and lead a small but highly talented team. If you have a proven track record of winning work, delivering high-quality technical solutions, and mentoring staff, this could be the next step in your career.

What You Will Be Doing

As Director – Transport Planning, you will have a hands-on leadership role with a focus on:

  • Business Development & Client Management
  • Lead business development activities and generate new work across the private-sector development market.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships with developers, planning consultants, and architects.
  • Take ownership of proposals, fee negotiations, and work-winning strategies.
  • Represent the business at industry events, workshops, and client meetings.

Strategic Leadership

  • Shape and implement the company’s transport planning growth strategy.
  • Mentor and support the team, helping to develop the next generation of planners.
  • Ensure high-quality delivery across all projects and maintain technical excellence.
  • Oversee project budgets, resource allocation, and profitability.

Technical Oversight & Delivery

  • Provide senior oversight on Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Access Appraisals, and transport inputs to planning submissions.
  • Advise clients on all stages of development planning from feasibility through to planning approvals and appeals.
  • Where needed, act as expert witness in planning inquiries.
  • Ensure work complies with national and local transport policies, guidance, and best practice.

About You

Essential Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years’ experience in transport planning, ideally in private-sector development.
  • Proven track record in winning work and managing client relationships.
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience delivering profitable projects.
  • Degree-qualified in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or related discipline.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Experience leading and mentoring teams.

Desirable

  • Chartered status (CIHT / ICE / TPP or equivalent).
  • Experience providing expert witness evidence.
  • Knowledge of transport modelling, accessibility analysis, TRICS, TEMPro, GIS.
  • Existing client network within the development sector.
