An innovative transport consultancy is seeking a motivated Graduate Transport Planner to join our multi-disciplinary team. You’ll work on sustainable urban mobility, active travel, traffic modelling, and planning applications, gaining hands-on experience with industry software and client engagement while contributing to real-world projects that improve accessibility and reduce carbon.

They are a growing transport consultancy specialising in evidence-based transport planning, active travel strategies, and low-carbon mobility solutions for public and private sector clients. Their team blends technical modelling, policy knowledge and stakeholder engagement to deliver pragmatic, creative outcomes. They value professional development, collaboration and a healthy work–life balance.

Role & responsibilities

  • Support senior planners on feasibility studies, transport assessments (TA), Travel Plans, and active travel audits.
  • Collect, process and analyse transport data (traffic counts, pedestrian/cycle counts, travel survey data).
  • Build, run and interpret microsimulation / strategic models (VISSIM, Aimsun, TRANSYT, Paramics, SATURN, VISSIM, or similar) — or support model development.
  • Prepare clear, professional reports, appendices, technical notes and planning submission materials.
  • Produce plan drawings, diagrams and maps using GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) and CAD where required.
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement: workshops, client meetings, and presentations.
  • Contribute to sustainable transport advice: active travel, micro-mobility, public transport accessibility, and demand management.
  • Keep up to date with national and local transport policy and guidance (e.g., NPPF, local transport strategies, LTN/Manual for Streets principles).
  • Support business development activities and bid writing as required.

What they're looking for (Person specification)

Essential

  • A degree (BSc or MEng/MSc) in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or related field. Graduate or within 1–2 years post-grad.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills; comfortable working with spreadsheets (Excel) and datasets.
  • Good written and verbal communication — able to present technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrable interest in sustainable transport and urban design.
  • Able to work in a team, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Exposure to transport modelling software (VISSIM, Aimsun, SATURN, VISUM, EMME), GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS), or CAD.
  • Experience with Python, R, or VBA for data analysis and automation.
  • Familiarity with travel demand modelling, STATS19, or TRICS.
  • Experience of producing Travel Plans, TAs, or TSRs as part of planning submissions.
  • Membership or working towards membership of Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) or Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
